New York was not won by the law. This figure model kit from VS3D puts Bill the Butcher at the centre of the Five Points, sculpted as Daniel Day-Lewis played him in Gangs of New York: mid-roar, a blade in each hand, daring the street to come and take it from him.

Two Blades and a Standing Invitation

VS3D catches Cutting at the top of a challenge — arms flung wide, a butcher's cleaver in one fist and a long knife in the other, boots planted either side of a broken brick wall with more blades already driven into the cobbles at his feet. The tailoring does as much work as the pose: a buttoned waistcoat over a rolled-sleeve shirt, a heavy belt, pinstriped trousers and tall boots, every fold sculpted like cloth that has been worn since dawn. Six alternate portraits come in the kit, and they pair three expressions with two heads — roaring, a clay pipe clenched in the teeth, or jaw set and quiet, each one offered with the skullcap or bare-headed. He can also be displayed with or without his stovepipe top hat and the tattered American flag draped across his shoulders, which turns the same sculpt from a street brawler into a man holding court.
