If it is in a word, or it is in a look, you cannot get rid of the Babadook. This figure model kit brings Mister Babadook up out of the storybook and onto the shelf, sculpted by Julles Modelado from the 2014 film and captured at the worst possible moment: the instant the knocking stops and the thing at the bottom of the stairs decides to stand up straight.

Tall, Thin, and Standing in Your Doorway

The proportions do the frightening here. He rises impossibly narrow through the shoulders and impossibly long through the arms, a greatcoat hanging off him in heavy vertical folds that fall past the knees and shred into a ragged, uneven hem where they meet the base. The coat is fully tailored in the sculpt, with a broad notched lapel, a buttoned front, deep pockets and turned cuffs at the wrists, and the fabric carries a fine grain across every panel that will drink up a drybrush. Both hands are spread wide and low, and the fingers are the detail that sells him: absurdly long, tapered to needle points, each one separately posed.

Above the high collar, the face is pure theatre. A battered stovepipe hat sits back on the crown with its brim buckling, lank hair straggles out beneath it to the shoulders, and the head is tilted with the chin up in a slow, pleased look downward. The eyes are wide and blank; the mouth is stretched into an enormous rictus grin that runs cheek to cheek over a full set of squared teeth. Beneath him, the base is the moment the book promised: a panelled bedroom door standing ajar on its own frame, with curling ribbons of shadow pouring up out of it and around his legs in twisting, clawed tendrils, all set on a round plinth with THE BABADOOK lettered into a plaque at the front.
