A Grin Full of Bad News
Everything here is built around that face. The skull is a wrinkled dome under a small cone cap, three pompoms nodding on their stalks behind it, and the ears sweep out to points with wisps of hair trailing back like a bad wig caught in the wind. Below the bulbous nose the grin runs ear to ear over a mouthful of tapering teeth — an expression that reads as friendly for about half a second. He is dressed in a baggy smock stitched with crescent moons, gathered at the sleeves into deep ruffled cuffs and finished with the pleated collar every one of the Klowns wears. One hand is splayed in greeting; the other hangs heavy with a star-patched carpet bag. Look down and the plinth carries the joke home — scrollwork, pompom bulbs, fairground lettering at the front, and a scatter of spilled popcorn around two enormous rounded shoes. Soft cloth, hard candy-shell footwear and that leathery hide give a painter three clearly separated jobs, which is what makes collectible resin figures like this one worth the hours.
